As much as we love a warm summer wedding, there is something extra special about 'off-season’ weddings during winter. Not only do you have much more choice and better rates when it comes to venues and suppliers but the atmosphere is always a little bit more special, especially in the run-up to Christmas. Here are our tips to make the most of your winter wedding.

Preparation is Key

Ireland is famous for its green fields, 'craic agus ceol' and (unfortunately) its terrible weather! If you prepare for the worst on your wedding day, nothing can stop you having a great day even if it rains. Dress appropriately, making sure you and your wedding party are all prepared for the cold. You could consider having your ceremony and party at the same venue to avoid wet commutes. If you are hoping for some outdoor pictures, make sure you have a really nice umbrella to cover you! Have a weatherproof plan so the wind, rain and potential snow don’t get in the way of your day.

Winter Favours

Use the season to your advantage and take it as the theme for your wedding! Favours are usually a small token of your appreciation and a memento of a great day. You could give your guests a pair of gloves, a scarf or blanket. A takeaway drink, perhaps Baileys, would be good to heat everyone up. You could even have Christmas decorations designed so that your guests can use them year after year and be reminded of your special day.

Christmas as a Theme

When you get married in winter, you have a built-in theme (Christmas, obviously!) and you should use this to your advantage. Hotels often have the most extravagant decorations so you can use them as props for your pictures and as a festive background for your wedding at no extra charge. Winter colours are great when used in weddings, think deep reds and dark purples for that regal, luxurious feel. Incorporate Christmas scented candles into your decor to add a special atmosphere and warmth to a wedding. Most importantly of all, you can include all of the delicious Christmas food and drink in your day like mulled wine and Christmas pudding. Yum!
