48 Hours in Cahernane

If you’re planning a trip to Killarney, you’ve made a great choice. With history, natural wonders and beauty around every corner, Killarney is small but punches well above its weight. 48 hours isn’t nearly enough time to explore the beauty of Killarney but it’s a great place to start. Take in the highlights of the National Park and the town centre with our whistlestop itinerary for 48 hours in Killarney. Before you add to your to-do list, book the perfect hotel in Killarney. Cahernane House Hotel adds a level of opulence and luxury to your Killarney trip, with service, dining and décor that is sure to impress.

Day One

Start your trip by checking into the hotel and enjoying a light snack from the Cellar Bar. We recommend homemade scones and freshly brewed coffee to perk you up after your journey. We’ll also include a complimentary drink if you’ve booked your stay directly on our website. Drop your bags in your room, refresh and head out to explore the beautiful Killarney countryside.

Borrow a couple of the Cahernane bikes and head out to explore the beautiful Killarney National Park on two wheels. After 1km, the cycle path leads into the woods. Keep the Lower Lake on your right and after 1km, you will see Muckross Abbey on your left. Enjoy a quick tour of the Abbey and its grounds before cycling onward to Muckross House. You can cycle past the main car park and back to Muckross Abbey before returning to Cahernane or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can continue onward to Dinis Cottage with the loop taking you around Muckross Lake.

Once you are settled back in Cahernane, enjoy a rest with a coffee or drink in the Library or Atrium before your gourmet dinner in the Herbert Restaurant. Don’t forget to order your picnic lunch for the following day from reception.

Day Two

Wake up feeling refreshed after a restful sleep in one of our uniquely decorated bedrooms. Join us in the dining room for a fantastic breakfast, with options from light and healthy to hearty and filling.

Enjoy a scenic walk or drive to the beautiful Ross Castle where you can walk to the Copper Mines and learn more about the thriving Copper industry in Killarney in the 19th century. It’s a 3km loop walk to Governor’s Rock. You might also enjoy a tour of Ross Castle, one of the ancestral homes of the Chiefs of the Clan O’Donoghue. If the weather is fine, take a short boat trip across to Innisfallen Island and explore the ruins of the 12th-century Augustinian priory that replaced the first monastery in the 7th Century.

After a morning of exploring the history of Killarney, use the afternoon to discover its natural beauty. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch al fresco, prepared by our chefs so you can save time and make the most of your day. Head to Torc Waterfall. You can get here by bike or car, depending how much time you have. It’s a 20 metres high waterfall which drains from the Devil’s Punchbowl corrie lake at Mangerton Mountain. It’s most impressive after heavy rainfall but beautiful all through the year.

After all this fresh air, why not return to Cahernane to have dinner in the Drawing Room, overlooking the beautiful views of Tomies and Glena Mountains. You might decide to walk the short distance to the town centre and enjoy the famous Killarney hospitality. Pubs are filled with tourists and locals enjoying some local beer and great traditional music that happens almost every night during high season. Walk or take a taxi back to Cahernane House Hotel for another great night’s sleep.

Day Three

Start your day slowly with another fantastic feed from Herbert Restaurant. Don’t rush home, leave your bags with us, and walk back to town to explore the shops and pubs you might have missed. Pick up something beautiful from one of the local, independent shops or bag a bargain in The Killarney Outlets. It would be a pity to leave the town without enjoying the beauty of Killarney Cathedral which was designed by the same designer as Big Ben and the interior of the Palace of Westminster in London.
