Autumn in the Outdoors

With restrictions finally starting to ease and a busy year ahead of us, we are so excited to welcome back leisure guests to Cahernane House Hotel. We are still being advised that outdoors is the safest place to be but luckily Killarney has one of the most impressive, exciting and picturesque landscapes in Ireland to enjoy. Here are some of the highlights of Killarney’s great outdoors, ideal for couples, families and solo explorers.

Hikes in Killarney

With a landscape of natural beauty featuring mountains, lakes and valleys, Killarney is a perfect spot for exploring on foot. Inside Killarney National Park, there are many walking and hiking routes to choose from with varying difficulties ranging from flat and easy to very difficult with steep slopes – so make sure to do a little research and prepare before you leave. One of our favourites is the Muckross Lake Loop Walk, starting at Muckross House to the lake shores, following Muckross Peninsula, through Reenadinna Wood and past Torc Waterfall. It takes 3-4 hours and there is a coffee & bathroom break available in Denis Cottage along the way.

Hiking and walking in Killarney is a popular activity for both locals and tourists and we encourage you to ‘leave no trace’, taking back any waste with you to dispose of properly and respecting the land.

Killarney National Park

Aside from walking, there are many places of interest in Killarney National Park. The main attraction in the park is Muckross House, a 19th Century Victorian mansion whose grounds you can explore at your leisure, admiring the scenery of the lakes and gardens. Explore the Muckross Abbey Ruins, which are surprisingly intact having been built in 1448. Make time to visit Ross Castle too, one of the park’s gems, located on the banks of Lough Leane (the lower lake). Add a day exploring the vast National Park to your Kerry Itinerary and you won’t regret it. There are sights and scenes here that will keep Killarney in your fondest memories long after you leave

Outdoor Activities in Killarney

Exploring a new place is great but to create memories you won’t forget, why not try an adventure activity while you’re there? Killarney has many exciting activities to try, making the most of the great outdoors and facilitating natural social distancing. You could take a traditional jaunting car through the park or to a site for rock climbing or abseiling. Horse riding is a popular activity here and there some companies facilitate families or groups if you’d prefer a guided tour on horseback. Although it’s not quite an adventure, Killarney is also home to some of the countries best golf courses with views you will never forget.

Cycling in Killarney

An easy, environmentally friendly way to get around Killarney and the National Park is to cycle. If you don’t feel up to a 4-hour walk around the lake, you can cycle it in just over an hour. You can also join an experienced guide for a cycling tour, showing you the highlights of the park and town and giving you a detailed history of the region including the local flora and fauna. You could also take a self-guided tour on clearly waymarked roads and trails throughout the park. If you’re feeling brave (and fit!) you could even take on some or all of the Ring of Kerry.

Best of all you don’t have to bring your own bike. Cahernane House Hotel has a limited number of bikes which we loan free of charge to guests so you can enjoy the park on two wheels without hassle. The bikes are loaned on a first come first served basis so make sure you are up with the lark and ready for a great day of exploration.

Enjoy Killarney Lakes

Some of Killarney’s most scenic and picturesque settings involve the Killarney Lakes and they’re also great for outdoor adventures. If you’d like to try something different on your staycation in Killarney, try surfing, windsurfing, canoeing, canyoning or kayaking on the lakes. You could also try a pedal boat or traditional rowing for a quiet and unobtrusive look at the surrounding wildlife and natural environment. There are companies who take care of everything from equipment to pick up so it couldn’t be easier to join in. For a more relaxed afternoon you might also enjoy a leisurely water cruise or an afternoon of fishing on the lake, enjoying some down time on your well-deserved break.
