Day Trips from Killarney

So you have explored the town centre and spent some time in the National Park, what’s next on your Killarney bucket list? Kerry is packed with things to do, from authentic Irish shopping to long drives exploring the wild side of the county. Day trips are a great way to get to know Kerry and you won’t be short of places to see. After a long day of exploring on a day trip from Killarney, retire to the comfort and luxury of Cahernane House Hotel for a magnificent meal and a great night’s sleep. Here are some of our favourite day trips from Killarney to enjoy with friends, family or alone.

Ring of Kerry

The Iveragh Peninsula, located the South West of County Kerry, is home to the magnificent Ring of Kerry, one of the best day trips in all of Ireland, and we’re not alone in that opinion. People come from near and far to experience for themselves what has been described as one of the most visually stunning drives (or walks or cycles!) in the world. Starting in the Town of Killarney, the top of the ring, the road takes in over 180km of rolling, rugged countryside, stunning coastline views and some of the most quaint and lovely shops and houses you’ll find in Kerry. The Ring of Kerry circuit measures 179km (111 miles) and will take about 3.5 hours to complete without stopping however we recommend stopping for pictures and exploring the wonder of Kerry as often as you can.

Cliffs of Moher

One of the wonders of Ireland lies on the West Coast of County Clare. The Cliffs of Moher is a stunning natural rock formation jutting abruptly and vertically into the Atlantic Ocean offering some of the most amazing views on the West Coast. The trip from Killarney to the Cliffs of Moher can take you through some picturesque towns like the market town of Listowel, the hometown of author and playwright, John B Keane, the village of Tarbert and onto the ferry crossing the Shannon Estuary to County Clare. If you’re lucky you might catch a glimpse of the dolphins who pop their heads up to say hello. The visitor centre is fantastic for all ages and gives you a more in-depth look at the cliffs and the local wildlife. It’s a fun day out for all of the family.

Gap of Dunloe

You can spend the day exploring one of Ireland’s most stunning natural landscapes, the Gap of Dunloe on a day trip from Killarney. Enjoy a walk in nature, guided or unguided, on an 11km trek through someone of Kerry’s wildlands before a jaunting ride getting to know the history of the area from a local guide. Enjoy a relaxing boat ride along the Gearhameen River and a stop at the magnificent Ross Castle. Enjoy mountains, lakes, and woodland and hear the stories of the legends of the area in a place that is unrivalled in beauty and history. The Gap of Dunloe day trip encompasses Killarney’s entire National Park and is a great way to get to know Killarney in detail in a short time.

Dingle Peninsula

A day trip to Dingle Ring and Slea Head is a unique opportunity to see the real Ireland in its finest unspoiled form. Enjoy spectacular views from a cliffside, trek or drive through a mountainous landscape and admire the views from cliffsides. You’ll experience spectacular views, architectural beauties like ancient churches and meet some friendly locals along the way. You can enjoy stops in beautiful towns and villages admiring local buildings, parishes, and areas. You can stop for a spot of lunch in a local café and pick up some local craft pieces to enjoy at home. Don’t forget your camera, it’s one of the most beautiful places in Ireland and you’ll want to take some pictures to remember forever.
