Killarney Racing Festival
Horse racing in Killarney
Killarney Racecourse, Ireland’s most scenic horseracing arena, hosts many annual race days. You could time your visit around their Annual Ladies Day or any of the evening races, but the highlight of the racing calendar is the Killarney Racing Festival.
All of the meetings at the scenic location are combined into three summer festivals in the months of May, July and August. Most of the races take place in the evening and are an ideal way to round off a day of sightseeing. Located just off the Muckross road, the racecourse attracts a high calibre of horses to take part in prestigious races like the Kingdom Gold Cup, the Cairn Rouge Stakes, the Ruby Stakes on the Flat and a number of valuable races over hurdles and fences.
Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle
Experiencing ‘The Ring’
If you’re a fan of cycling, either taking part or observing, The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is one of the biggest and best annual cycling events in Ireland which takes place the first Saturday July.
36 years ago, a cycling group from Killarney decided to cycle the 175-kilometre ‘Ring of Kerry’ to raise money for charity. All these years later, it’s still going ahead with up to 10,000 participants coming together each year to raise money and stretch the legs on this scenic cycling route.
They have raised almost 16 million for 150 charity organisations in Kerry so far, helping the most vulnerable and deserving in our community.
The Killarney Regatta
235 years of rowing tradition
With bodies of water as beautiful as the stunning lakes of Killarney, is it any wonder that boating is a popular pastime here. The Killarney Regatta is one of the biggest and best annual boating events in Killarney. T.F Hall’s book ‘History of Boat Racing in Ireland’ makes reference to a regatta being held on the famous lakes in 1830 meaning the race has taken place for an impressive 190 years and counting, with some saying 2019 was its 234th birthday.
The regatta, which uses traditional timber boats, is a popular event in the town and usually takes place at O’Mahoney’s Point. If you have any interest in rowing, boating, or the history of one of the oldest Irish sports, it’s an event not to be missed.
Rose of Tralee International Festival
While it doesn’t technically take place in Killarney, we couldn’t go without mentioning the world-famous Rose of Tralee International Festival which takes place in the town of Tralee, less than 30-minutes’ drive from our hotel. The competition is one of Ireland’s oldest and largest festivals located in the heart of the Kingdom of Kerry and celebrated 60 years in 2019.
The festival usually takes place in over a week in August and includes a parade, a fashion show, live music, fireworks and plenty of other festivities with fun for the whole family.
It’s the highlight of the Kerry events calendar and well worth the short drive from Killarney.
