Gins at Cahernane
Cahernane House has developed a love for Irish craft gins. A particular favourite are those from the Blackwater Distillery in Co. Waterford. In Victorian times Whites of Waterford exported herbs, tea and spices from Ireland. Their vessels would import from all over the globe and dock in Cappoquin Co. Waterford, which is less than one kilometer from the distillery used today.
Another favourite is Berthas Revenge, the world’s first milk Gin. Bertha, or ‘Big Bertha’ as she was known, was a legendary Droimeann cow from Sneem in Co. Kerry. She was reared locally, and was bought as a calf by a farmer called Jerome O’Leary. When she died on New Year’s Eve 1993, just 3 months shy of her 49th birthday, she had become something of a local celebrity.
Over the course of her long life she had given birth to 39 calves, and this achievement, together with her tremendous age, had earned her an entry in the Guinness Book of Records. Using whey alcohol from local dairy farmers in Cork and an interesting mix of irish foraged and grown botanicals, the result is a Cork hand-crafted gin that highlights the character of Bertha in her prime
