Autumn Breaks in Killarney

Nothing says Autumn like a stroll in the park, admiring the change in colour of the trees and crunching leaves underfoot. Before we prepare for the cold winter nights and Christmas cheer, you still have time to enjoy Ireland’s most impressive season. This Autumn take time to enjoy the season with a trip to Killarney, enjoying the great outdoors or getting cosy by the hotel fire. Here are our tips to get the best of your autumn break in Cahernane Hotel in Killarney, co. Kerry.

Explore the National Park

The spectacular Killarney National Park is impressive any time of the year, rain hail or shine. However, there is an argument that once the weather has cooled and the flocks of tourists have returned home, early autumn is the best time to visit. The change in seasons is most impressive in the park, with a shift in colours from vibrant green to deepest red, orange and yellow. It’s the perfect place for a hike, walk, cycle or jaunting car trip. Pack a delicious picnic and make the most of the afternoon in this unique and magical place. With secluded trails, exotic lakes and leaves scattered among the walkaways, a visit to Killarney National Park should be on every autumn schedule.

Carranutohill

Killarney has something for everyone, even the most adventurous of hikers. Carranutohill is Ireland’s highest mountain, standing at 1039 metres and it’s located on the Iveragh Peninsula in Kerry. It’s an extremely challenging climb but at the end, you are rewarded with some of the most spectacular views of the county. Summer is by far the peak season but warm weather, humidity and crowds can make it difficult to enjoy at a leisurely pace. Make the most of the rare warm days in Autumn and enjoy a hike you won’t forget. Remember to pack for all weathers, bring extra food and drink, tell someone where you are going and do some mountain training before you attempt this hike.

Animal Spotting in Killarney

Autumn is a great time for wildlife lovers and photographers to visit Killarney. Did you know that Autumn is rutting season for the deer in Killarney National Park? As well as birds chirping and water rushing, you’ll often hear the bellowing of these beautiful beasts as you explore. The deer will rub their antlers or horns on trees and shrubs, fight with each other, wallow in mud or dust, self-anoint and herd females together. Extreme caution must be taken during this season as deer can be aggressive if cornered or approached.

You can also enjoy some exotic and beautiful birds during autumn, many of which have been blown in by storms or nest for the winter here. The Kerry coastline is a natural in for these birds, especially Cromane (just off the Ring of Kerry Road). Check-in with local guides and see what unusual species you can spot.
