Over Land and Sea: How to get to Kerry from the UK

Kerry should be on everyone’s bucket list. With culture, history, nature and fun on every corner, it’s the epitome of life in Ireland for thousands of residents and hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Everything about Kerry is special, from the food & drink offered to the coastline, monuments, and architecture that’s truly unique to our county. There are many ways to get here from most parts of the UK. Even if the commute is long, it is beautiful and worth it once you get here. Here are the easiest ways to get to Kerry from the UK.

UK to Farranfore Flights

Farranfore is the name of a village in County Kerry on the N22 road approximately midway between Tralee and Killarney. Kerry Airport is often referred to as Farranfore Airport but there is only one international airport in the county. There is regular and frequent access between Kerry Airport and different parts of the UK. Birmingham and County Kerry have 61 direct flights per week. There are direct flights to and from Kerry and London Luton & London Stansted. Flights depart every day between Kerry and Manchester. The most popular airlines for these routes are Ryanair, easyJet, Aer Lingus, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, and British Airways. Killarney’s nearest airport is Kerry Airport,17km from Killarney. No matter where you are in the UK, there is a flight to Kerry nearby.

UK to Cork Airport Flights

Cork Airport is another popular choice for UK travellers, and you get to explore two beautiful Irish cities on the way. To reach Cork from the UK, Ryanair flies from Liverpool, Gatwick, Stansted, and East Midlands airports. Alternatively, Aer Lingus flies from Heathrow, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Jersey. The most frequently departed route is the route from London (LHR) with an average of 28 flights from Cork every week.

Cork and Kerry are 90km apart and moving between cities is easy by car or public transport. If you’re picking up a car at Cork Airport, the journey time between the two destinations is one hour and 21 minutes, travelling 89 km on the N22. The bus is the most cost-effective way to get between Cork and Killarney. Bus Eireann or Expressway will get you between Cork Airport and Killarney Bus Station for between €16-28 with one transfer.

Dubin Airport to Kerry Airport Flights

Just like London is the centre of flights in the UK, Dublin is the centre of most of the flights to and from Ireland. Flights arrive from several parts of the UK every few minutes with half a dozen airlines servicing the country’s main airport. Aer Lingus has flights between London Heathrow, Birmingham, Manchester, Southampton, Edinburgh, Bristol and Glasgow. Ryanair flies from East Midlands, London Stanstead, Newcastle, Newquay, Birmingham and many more. There is always a local flight from the UK to Dublin!

Travel time between Dublin and Killarney is long but scenic. Driving will take around 4 hours, traffic-dependent, and it’s about 307km via the M8. The train is the quickest and most comfortable way to get between the cities at 3 hours and 15 minutes. Trains depart from Dublin’s main train station, Heuston Station, to Killarney Co. Kerry. You’ll be treated to the most magnificent views along the way and there is a café service and other facilities on board including bathrooms and complimentary Wi-Fi. Booking the train in advance is the cheapest way to travel and should cost approximately €25 each way for basic tickets. There are also buses between Dublin and Killarney that take approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes and cost €30 each way. We always recommend booking any bus or train journey in advance, especially during the peak travel seasons of March-October. You’ll get their lowest fares and are guaranteed a seat on the bus/train instead of waiting for the next one!
